A Little About Lavender

A Little About Lavender

Lavender is a fragrant flowering herb that is valued for its calming scent and gentle botanical benefits. There are hundreds of different cultivars which have different colors and scents, but most well known are the soft purple blooms and floral scent. Depending on the climate, lavender is widely grown as a perennial and with the right soil conditions plants will thrive for many years. The plant does not like “wet feet” and tends to like well draining soil. After a plant is established it may even tolerate mild drought.

Support a restful sleep with a few drops of oil on a pillow. Diffusing lavender oil in a room can create a peaceful atmosphere and may promote a calming environment and ease restlessness.

Lavender is used in many products from soaps and lotions to balms and bath salts. It provides a naturally clean scent that has been shown to provide soothing skin benefits.

Lavender is generally considered safe and gentle but a few precautions should be considered.

  • Dilute oil before applying to skin directly. Essential oils are very concentrated and should be properly mixed with carrier oils like jojoba or coconut oil or used in properly formulated products.

  • Try a patch test before widely using to check for skin sensitivity.

  • Avoid contact with eyes and only use externally.

  • Should be used with caution during pregnancy.

Meet the Farm

Ontelaunee Lavender Farm is a seasonal production farm where we grow and distill artisan lavender oil right here on the farm. Using traditional small-batch methods, we carefully capture the plant’s natural essence to create botanical skincare products that stay as close to nature as possible.

Along with our lavender, we handcraft a collection of hardwood maple spoons. Each one is designed to be as functional in your kitchen as they are beautiful. Our focus on farm-grown botanicals and thoughtful, handmade goods means every product reflects the care and craft from our fields and workshop.

Our Story

My husband and I are lucky to live on part of the original farm that he grew up on — back then it was a dairy farm — and after years of wondering what to do with our beautiful property we discovered lavender. One key to its success here is that deer don't eat it. Because we weren’t sure which plants would thrive on our hill, we planted more than ten different cultivars.

Today the plants are flourishing, and we're planning to add a beautiful, appointment-only, photography area that will overlook a portion of the Appalachian Mountain Range and a sunset view. It will be a beautiful spot for Family Photos, Wedding pictures, Yoga on the Hill or to book some relaxation time. Coming in 2027 season.

We focus on growing healthy lavender and other natural herbs. We don’t use chemicals or fertilizers on our plants. These plants are carefully harvested and handcrafted into small-batch oils that become the foundation of our natural botanical products.

I have been a woodworker on and off for over 30yrs and soon our hardwood maple spoons will be featured here. Please check back for regional shows that we will be attending in 2026.

We are a small working farm and not open for onsite product sales or tours at this time.
